It is our Victory: criminal case against Anastasia Denisova is Closed

On May 11, 2010 attorney Marina Dubrovina, received a reply (In Russian: p. 1, p. 2) from the Krasnodar krai prosecutor's office, which stated that the criminal case against Anastasia Denisova had been closed on April 19, 2010 because of the absence of the elements of a crime.

On April 15 “Transparency international – Russia” and Human Rights Center “Memorial” received an official reply from Corporation “Microsoft-Russia” to their common appeal, where NGOs expressed their concern about involvement of the company in non-transparent schemes and in notorious criminal cases against civil activists and human rights defenders. Although the appeal was sent to the headquarters in the USA, the reply came form the legal affairs department of Microsoft-Russia.

On March 24, 2010 at the second pre-hearing the senior assistant of the district prosecutor Zhanna Karpenko was supposed to present an answer to the defence motion. During the first pre-hearing the defence councel asked for the elimination of criminal charges because of the absence of the document, which annuls an order to dismiss criminal complaint. All of a sudden, it turned out at the pre-hearing that such a document had showed up in the criminal case.

The formal pre-hearing in the trial of human rights defender Ms Anastasia Denisova will take place on 22 March 2010 at 10 am. Anastasia Denisova has been charged with the “illegal use of non-licensed software by a person in an official position” and the “creation of computer malware”. If found guilty of these charges, she could face up to nine years in prison and a fine of up to 700,000 Rubles (approximately 17,400 Euro).
